What Makes Essence Different
All Aurà water-based formulas produce fine haze for lighting enhancement. The difference is how long the haze stays in the air. Essence is engineered for maximum suspension time — it fills a space and stays there, keeping light beams, lasers, and projections defined for extended periods without needing to re-haze every few minutes.
This matters most when haze is a constant, not a cue. When your lighting design relies on persistent atmosphere from start to finish — not just for one moment, but for the entire show, service, or event. Essence lets you fill the room early, maintain with minimal re-firing, and keep the visual quality consistent throughout.

Which Aurà Formula Do You Need?
The SurgeFX Aurà™ line includes three water-based formulas and one oil-based formula. Each produces fine, professional haze for lighting enhancement — the difference is hang time and machine type.

Quick Decision Guide:
-
Need haze that clears fast? → Aurà Whisper
-
Need all-purpose haze? → Aurà Elemental
-
Need haze that hangs for a long time? → Aurà Essence (this product)
-
Have an oil-based hazer? → Aurà Pro (not compatible with water-based machines)
Essence vs. Pro — What's the Difference?
Both offer extended hang time, but they're built for different machines. Essence is water-based — clean, zero residue, works in any water-based hazer. Aurà Pro is oil-based — denser output with even longer hang time, but requires an oil-based haze machine and may leave a light film on surfaces over time. If your hazer takes water-based fluid, Essence gives you the longest hang time available in the Aurà water-based lineup.
⚠️ Water-Based vs. Oil-Based: Whisper, Elemental, and Essence are water-based fluids for water-based haze machines. Aurà Pro is oil-based for oil-based hazers. These are not interchangeable — using the wrong fluid type will damage your machine and void the warranty.
Will this work in my haze machine?
Aurà Essence works in water-based haze machines only. Check your machine's manual or spec sheet — if it calls for water-based haze fluid, Essence is compatible. If your machine requires oil-based fluid, use Aurà Pro instead. Using the wrong fluid type will damage the machine.
How long does it actually hang?
Significantly longer than standard or fast-dissipating formulas. The exact duration depends on room size, ceiling height, HVAC airflow, and temperature. In a still, enclosed indoor space, Essence can remain suspended for extended periods with minimal density loss. In venues with active HVAC, the haze will still last longer than Elemental or Whisper, but air movement will gradually disperse it — which is why occasional maintenance bursts from the hazer keep the atmosphere topped off.
Is haze fluid the same as fog fluid?
No. Haze and fog are different effects that use different machines and different fluids. Haze produces a fine, even mist that stays suspended and makes light beams visible. Fog produces thicker, more visible clouds of atmosphere. Do not use haze fluid in a fog machine or fog fluid in a haze machine. For fog fluid, see the Nebula™ fog fluid line.
Will it trigger smoke detectors?
Any atmospheric effect can potentially trigger smoke detection systems, especially particle-based detectors. Because Essence is designed for extended suspension, haze can accumulate to higher densities over time — making it more important to coordinate with the venue on detector management. Most professional venues have protocols for this. Contact the venue during your planning phase.
Does it leave residue?
No. Aurà Essence is water-based and leaves zero residue on surfaces, equipment, costumes, or instruments. No oily film, no sticky buildup. This is a key advantage over oil-based haze fluids, which can leave a light film over extended use.
Is it safe to breathe?
Aurà Essence is non-toxic and unscented. It's safe for indoor use in venues with normal ventilation. As with any atmospheric effect, prolonged heavy exposure in a poorly ventilated space can cause mild throat or eye irritation in sensitive individuals. Because Essence is designed for extended runs, ensure the venue has reasonable ventilation.
How much do I need?
Haze machines are far more fluid-efficient than fog machines — a typical water-based hazer running at moderate output uses roughly 1 gallon per 8–20 hours of use. Because Essence hangs longer, you may actually use less fluid per session than you would with faster-dissipating formulas, since the machine doesn't need to fire as often to maintain density.
Can I mix Aurà formulas?
We recommend using one formula at a time for consistent results. If switching between formulas (e.g., Essence for one venue, Whisper for another), flush the tank between switches. Do not mix water-based and oil-based fluids under any circumstances.
Essence Is a "Set and Maintain" Fluid
Unlike Whisper (which you cue for specific moments), Essence rewards a fill-and-maintain approach. Run the hazer during pre-show or rehearsal to fill the space, then reduce output to a low maintenance level that tops off what HVAC and natural dissipation remove. The goal is a consistent, even atmosphere — not bursts.
HVAC Is Your Main Variable
Air handling systems are the #1 factor in how long any haze formula hangs. Essence is designed to resist dissipation, but aggressive HVAC will still move and clear haze over time. If you're working in a venue with heavy air exchange, talk to the facilities team about reducing airflow in the performance space during the show. Even a small HVAC adjustment can dramatically extend haze persistence.
Build Density Gradually
Don't blast the hazer at full output to fill the room fast — this creates uneven patches and can trigger smoke detectors. Instead, start 30–60 minutes before doors at moderate output and let the haze distribute naturally. By the time the audience arrives, you'll have smooth, even coverage at the ideal density. Then switch to low maintenance output for the duration.
Coordinate Smoke Detection Early
Because Essence is designed for sustained, high-density haze, smoke detector coordination is especially important. Contact the venue during planning — not during load-in. Most professional venues can temporarily disable or zone specific detectors, switch to heat-based detection, or assign a fire watch. This conversation should happen before you sign the venue contract.
Less Is Still More
Even with a long-lasting formula, the best haze is barely visible on its own. You should see the light beams, lasers, and gobos it reveals — not the haze itself. Over-hazing a room reduces visibility, makes the space feel foggy, and can trigger fire alarms. Essence's extended hang time means you can achieve the same visual effect at lower output levels than you'd need with faster-dissipating formulas.
