Why It Matters
DMX cable is the nervous system of your effects rig. Every cold spark machine, fog jet, moving head, and LED fixture depends on clean, reliable DMX signal to fire on cue. Cheap cable introduces signal dropouts, flickering, misfires, and random behavior — especially on longer runs or in electrically noisy environments near power cables, dimmers, and RF equipment.
The SurgeFX Pro DMX Cable uses 21AWG tinned copper conductors with spiral copper braided shielding — a heavier gauge and better shield than most budget cables. This means lower resistance on long runs, better interference rejection, and a cable that holds up to repeated coiling, uncoiling, and the general abuse of touring and event production.

Preset Lengths
These are the most common lengths used in real production setups. Select any preset, or choose Custom Cut for an exact length.
| Length |
Typical Use |
| 1.5 ft |
Ultra-short jump — tight truss, fixture-to-fixture |
| 5 ft |
Short run — adjacent fixtures, rack to first unit |
| 10 ft |
Standard run — most fixture spacing |
| 15 ft |
Mid run — totems, stage edge to fixture |
| 25 ft |
Long run — across stage, truss-to-truss |
| 50 ft |
FOH runs — controller to stage, across truss span |
| 100 ft |
Large venue & festival runs — FOH to far stage, tent setups |
Custom Cut: Need 37 feet? 72 feet? 8 feet? Select Custom Cut (By the Foot) and specify your exact length. We build it to order so your cable run fits your rig — no coiling excess, no stretching short.
What's Included
1× SurgeFX Pro DMX Cable in your selected length, terminated with 3-pin XLR connectors (male and female ends).
Is this actual DMX cable or just mic cable with XLR connectors?
This is proper DMX-spec cable — 2-conductor with spiral copper braided shielding, designed for digital DMX512 signal. Standard microphone cable uses different impedance characteristics and can cause signal problems on DMX runs, especially at longer lengths or with many fixtures daisy-chained. For reliable DMX, use DMX cable.
3-pin or 5-pin?
This cable uses 3-pin XLR connectors, which is the most common DMX connector in event production and effects equipment. Most SurgeFX machines, LED fixtures, fog machines, and cold spark units use 3-pin DMX. If your equipment requires 5-pin DMX, you'll need a 5-pin cable or a 3-to-5-pin adapter.
What's the maximum recommended DMX run length?
The DMX512 standard supports cable runs up to approximately 1,000 feet (300 meters) per universe. In practice, 21AWG cable handles typical production runs well within this limit. For runs approaching the maximum, or for runs through electrically noisy environments, consider adding a DMX opto-splitter or signal booster to maintain clean signal.
Can I daisy-chain fixtures with this cable?
Yes. DMX is designed to be daisy-chained — DMX out from one fixture connects to DMX in on the next. Use the appropriate cable length between each fixture in the chain. For best results, terminate the last fixture in the chain with a DMX terminator (120Ω resistor across pins 2 and 3).
How does custom cut work?
Select Custom Cut (By the Foot), enter the quantity in feet that you need, and we build the cable to your exact length with XLR connectors on both ends. Custom cables are built to order — allow standard processing time before shipping.
Can I use this for audio / microphones?
Physically, it will connect — the XLR connectors are the same. However, DMX cable and mic cable have different impedance characteristics. This cable is optimized for DMX512 digital signal. For audio applications, use audio-grade cable designed for the impedance and capacitance requirements of analog audio signals.
Will this work with my SurgeFX effects machines?
Yes. This cable is compatible with all SurgeFX DMX-controlled equipment, including the Solaris and Solaris Jet cold spark machines, fog machines, haze machines, CO₂ jets, confetti launchers, and stage lighting fixtures.
Measure First, Order Once
Before ordering custom cuts, measure your actual cable runs — controller to first fixture, fixture to fixture, and any runs to FOH or backstage. Add 2–3 feet of slack per run. A cable that's slightly too long coils neatly. A cable that's too short is useless and puts stress on the connectors.
Don't Run DMX Alongside Power
Keep DMX cable physically separated from AC power cables whenever possible. Running DMX parallel to power cables — especially near dimmers, motors, or high-current loads — can introduce electromagnetic interference that causes flickering, misfires, or erratic fixture behavior. Cross power cables at 90° angles when you must intersect.
Use a DMX Terminator
On the last fixture in a daisy-chain, install a DMX terminator (120Ω resistor between pins 2 and 3). This prevents signal reflections that can cause random behavior on long chains or in electrically noisy environments. Most problems blamed on "bad DMX cable" are actually unterminated chains.
Label Your Cables
Once you've dialed in your cable lengths for a rig, label each cable with its length and destination (e.g., "25ft — FOH to Stage Left Truss"). This saves time on setup and teardown, and prevents grabbing the wrong cable mid-load-in.
Coil Properly
Over-under coiling prevents kinks and extends cable life. Never wrap cables tightly around your elbow — this introduces twists that degrade the conductor and shielding over time. Take the extra 30 seconds to coil properly every time.
Test Before the Show
Always test your full DMX chain before doors open. Send a test signal through every fixture in the chain. A dead cable found during setup is annoying. A dead cable found during a live show is a disaster. Keep a spare 10 ft and 25 ft cable in your kit for emergencies.
