✦ Who Should Buy the Retrofit Kit?
-
Owners of Any Standard 12" Metal Foam Cannon — If your current cannon uses a traditional bolt-on or clamp-on metal barrel and you're tired of fighting with it during setup and teardown, this kit replaces that barrel with the Maxx quick-connect system. Fits any standard 12" metal foam cannon regardless of brand or model.
-
Multi-Event Operators Who Value Speed — When you're running back-to-back events, every minute of setup and breakdown matters. The Maxx barrel system eliminates tools from the barrel connection process. Pull up to the venue, snap the barrel on, run your event, snap it off, and go. On a packed weekend schedule, that time savings compounds.
-
Operators Tired of Mesh Changes on Metal Barrels — Replacing foam netting on traditional metal barrels is one of the most frustrating maintenance tasks in foam production. The Maxx ABS barrel uses a Velcro-secured mesh system that swaps without tools. What used to take 15–20 minutes of fumbling with zip ties and wire becomes a 2-minute job.
-
Mobile Operators & Rental Companies — A removable barrel means your cannon breaks down into more compact, more transportable pieces. The ABS barrel is lighter than metal, less prone to denting, and snaps off for separate storage. Easier to load, easier to protect in transit, easier to store between events.
-
Operators Who Want Maxx Convenience Without Buying a New Machine — Your existing 12" cannon works fine — the motor, fan, and output are solid. You just want a better barrel system. The retrofit kit gives you the Maxx's best feature (the quick-connect barrel) without replacing a machine that still has life left in it.
⚠ Not Right If: You're looking for increased foam output or performance — this is a barrel and convenience upgrade, not a motor or airflow upgrade. Your cannon will produce the same foam it always has. If you need more power, the
Foam Blaster Maxx v2 is the better investment. Also requires a
standard 12" metal foam cannon — this kit does not work with non-standard sizes or the
Pro-X ooze-style machines.
📦 What's in the Kit
Maxx ABS Barrel
Proprietary tapered high-impact injection-molded ABS barrel — the same barrel used in the Foam Blaster Maxx v2. Removable. Lightweight. Durable. Won't dent, rust, or corrode.
Quick-Release Retaining Clamp
Secures barrel to your cannon body. Tool-free operation — snap on, snap off. No bolts, no wrenches, no fumbling.
Foam Mesh Netting
High-output foam mesh material pre-cut for the Maxx barrel. Produces thick, dense foam. Secured via Velcro — swaps in minutes without tools.
Velcro Strip
Secures mesh to barrel. Strong hold during operation, easy release for mesh changes.
Plastic Push Pins
Cover existing bolt holes and mounting points on your metal cannon body. Seals air leaks from the old barrel mounting system to maintain optimal air velocity through the new barrel.
Installation Hardware
All fasteners and hardware needed to mount the retaining clamp to your existing cannon body.
⚠ Wraps Not Included. The Retrofit Kit ships with the standard Maxx ABS barrel. Custom barrel wraps and skins are available separately through
Custom Foam Party Branding.
What You Keep
Your existing motor, fan, base/frame, plumbing, pump connections, stand mounting hardware, and electrical components all stay in place. The retrofit replaces only the barrel assembly — everything from the barrel-to-fan junction forward. Your cannon's power source, airflow generator, and plumbing remain untouched.
🔧 Installation Overview
The retrofit process involves removing your existing metal barrel assembly and replacing it with the Maxx quick-connect system. This is a one-time installation — once the retaining clamp is mounted, the barrel snaps on and off tool-free for every event going forward.
What You'll Need
- Basic hand tools (screwdriver, wrench set) for removing the old barrel and mounting the retaining clamp
- Your existing 12" metal foam cannon
- Approximately 30–60 minutes for the full retrofit
General Process
-
Remove the old barrel — Unbolt or unclamp your existing metal barrel from the cannon body. Note how the barrel-to-fan junction connects — you'll be replacing this interface.
-
Seal old mounting holes — Use the included plastic push pins to cover any bolt holes or mounting points left exposed from the old barrel. These holes are air leaks — sealing them ensures all air velocity goes through the new barrel instead of escaping through gaps.
-
Mount the retaining clamp — Attach the quick-release retaining clamp to your cannon body using the included hardware. This is the permanent mounting point for the Maxx barrel.
-
Attach the Maxx barrel — Slide the ABS barrel into the retaining clamp and lock it in place. This is now the step you'll repeat every event — snap on at setup, snap off at breakdown. No tools required from this point forward.
-
Install foam mesh — Attach the included foam mesh to the barrel using the Velcro strip. Mesh is ready to produce foam immediately.
-
Test — Run your cannon with foam solution and verify airflow and foam output. Check for air leaks around the barrel junction and push pin seals. Adjust if needed.
💡 One-Time Effort, Permanent Benefit. The installation itself takes 30–60 minutes and requires basic tools. But once it's done, every setup and breakdown after that is tool-free. The retaining clamp stays permanently mounted to your cannon. The barrel snaps in and out. That's the whole point.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What cannons does this fit?
Any standard 12" metal foam cannon. The retaining clamp mounts to the barrel junction on any cannon with a standard 12" opening. This includes foam cannons from multiple manufacturers — it's not limited to SurgeFX machines.
Will this increase my foam output?
No. This is a barrel and convenience upgrade, not a performance upgrade. Your cannon will produce the same foam output it produced before the retrofit. The improvement is in setup speed, breakdown speed, and mesh replacement ease. If you need more foam output, upgrade to the Foam Blaster Maxx v2.
What if my cannon isn't a 12" opening?
The kit is designed for standard 12" foam cannons. If your cannon has a different barrel diameter, this kit will not fit. Measure the internal diameter of your cannon's barrel opening before purchasing. If you're unsure, contact SurgeFX support at (866) 577-8743 with your cannon's make and model.
Is this the same barrel as the Maxx v2?
Yes — the exact same proprietary ABS barrel, retaining clamp, and mesh system used in the Foam Blaster Maxx v2. The retrofit kit brings that barrel system to your existing cannon.
How long does installation take?
Approximately 30–60 minutes for the initial retrofit using basic hand tools. Once installed, the barrel snaps on and off tool-free for every event after that.
Do I need special tools?
Just basic hand tools (screwdriver, wrench set) for the one-time installation of the retaining clamp. After the retrofit is complete, no tools are needed for daily operation — that's the whole point of the upgrade.
Can I still use my old barrel after installing this?
Not simultaneously, but you can keep your old barrel as a backup. The retaining clamp replaces the old barrel mounting interface. If you ever wanted to revert to the metal barrel, you'd need to remove the retaining clamp and remount the old hardware.
Are replacement mesh nettings available?
Yes. The Replacement Netting is available separately. Because the Maxx barrel uses Velcro-attached mesh, swapping netting takes minutes with no tools. Keep spare netting in your kit so you can swap at any event without downtime.
What about wraps and skins?
Barrel wraps are not included with the kit. Custom branding wraps and skins for the Maxx ABS barrel are available through Custom Foam Party Branding.
What's the warranty?
1-Year Limited Warranty covering the kit components (barrel, retaining clamp, hardware). The warranty covers manufacturing defects in the kit itself. It does not extend to your existing cannon's motor, fan, or other original components.
Will the push pins really seal the air leaks?
Yes. The push pins are specifically sized for standard bolt-hole diameters on 12" metal cannon bodies. They create a press-fit seal that prevents air from escaping through old mounting points. Proper sealing is important — air leaks reduce the velocity through the barrel, which reduces foam output. If the included push pins don't fit your specific bolt holes perfectly, a small amount of silicone sealant will close any remaining gaps.
I run multiple cannons — can I retrofit all of them?
Absolutely. This is one of the strongest use cases for the kit — standardizing a fleet of mixed-brand cannons on the same Maxx barrel system. Once all your cannons use the same barrel, mesh nettings and barrels become interchangeable across machines. One spare barrel fits any cannon in your fleet.
💡 Pro Tips from SurgeFX Operators
Seal Every Hole
Air leaks are the enemy of foam output. When you remove the old barrel, every exposed bolt hole, screw hole, and gap is a leak point. Use all the included push pins, and if any gaps remain, seal them with a bead of silicone. Run the fan without the barrel attached and feel around the junction for escaping air — seal anything you find. The tighter the seal, the more air velocity goes through the barrel where it belongs.
Mark Your Clamp Position
Once you've found the optimal clamp position during installation, mark it with a paint pen or piece of tape. If the clamp ever shifts or you need to remove it for any reason, you can reinstall it in exactly the same position without trial and error.
Keep Your Old Barrel as a Backup
Don't throw away the metal barrel you removed. Store it with your spare parts. If you ever have a problem with the ABS barrel at an event (damage, loss, unexpected failure), you can revert to the metal barrel to finish the show. Having a backup means a broken barrel never cancels an event.
Carry Spare Mesh
The biggest advantage of the Maxx barrel system is tool-free mesh changes. Take full advantage of this by keeping 1–2 spare mesh nettings in your transport case. If mesh tears or wears out mid-event, you can swap it in 2 minutes and keep running. With the old metal barrel, a mesh failure mid-event was a show-stopper.
Standardize Your Fleet
If you run multiple cannons from different manufacturers, retrofitting all of them with this kit puts every cannon on the same barrel system. Barrels, mesh, and replacement parts become interchangeable. One set of spares covers your entire fleet. This simplifies inventory, reduces the number of different spare parts you carry, and means any operator on your crew can set up any cannon without learning a different barrel system.
Test Before Your First Paying Event
After the retrofit, run a full foam test at your shop or warehouse before taking it to an event. Verify foam output, check for air leaks, make sure the barrel seats firmly in the clamp, and confirm the mesh produces the foam density you expect. Discovering a loose clamp or unsealed bolt hole is much better at your shop than at a client's venue.
Clean the ABS Barrel After Each Event
Rinse the ABS barrel with clean water after every event to prevent dried foam solution from building up. ABS is easy to clean — a quick rinse and wipe down keeps the barrel in good condition. If you've used Foam Color Additive, rinse immediately to prevent dye residue from staining the barrel surface.
